Introduction to the Cajun's
The first Cajuns were French peasants that came to the new world from France, made their home and lived in an area called Acadia, what is now known as Nova Scotia. In short, that is the origin of the word Cajun. Someone that lives in Acadia would be Acadian, ah - Cahd - jian. Abbreviate it and say it fast and you get Cajun. England & France fought over the new land, and in short, England won. The English told the French settlers to be loyal to the English crown, or else. The French peasants were in no way going to fall in line with those rules, and were, basically, kicked out of the area, in various ways. Some escaped into the woods to live with the natives peoples, some were brought back to England, and some made their way south in ships, making the famous 1755 migration to what is now known as Louisiana.
Cajun French, as a language, is a bit differant from standardized French. As I understand from conversations with Cajuns, Cajun French is older, and has evolved seperately than standardized (today's Parisian) French language. There are many interesting stories of how words and phrases were misinterpreted.
